5 Steps to Writing a Good Essay
Specific techniques and skills are required in order to write a great essay. Those qualities don’t just come naturally for everybody. Following the 5 steps below, you will be able to improve quickly and can compose and original and coherent essay more easily.
- Step 1: Brainstorming
- Step 2: Outlining the Body
- Step 3: Choosing a Thesis
- Step 4: Composing Your First Draft
- Step #5: Revision and Editing
Think over your essay topic carefully before composing your essay. First consider the topic generally, and then decide what you could write about the topic and what points you need to make. Write down your ideas, including the ones that may not seem so great at first. Once all your ideas are in one place, you can start focusing on your best ideas.
Take a look at your idea collection and find out if there are some ideas that seem to be naturally connected and concepts that are related to each other. Make then the core ideas of your essay. Write down a few things you can talk about to discuss or support these ideas. Do a list of points and sub-points and organize them to outline your essay.
A thesis is a statement that sums up your points of the essay. It is in the first paragraph. The rest of your essay should be devoted for explaining, supporting, and developing that thesis. Although the thesis of an essay is of first importance, it’s a lot easier to write it after the outline of the body is done. Try to sum up the outline in a couple of sentences, which will allow you to come up with a good thesis. Write down your thesis and refer to it while composing the essay to ensure that you don’t go off topic.
You have determined all the ideas to put in the essay. Now you need to form your ideas into sentences. Use your outline to guide you in composing the body paragraphs. Next, place a concluding paragraph at the end of the essay. Finally, write an introductory paragraph to introduce your thesis statement and topic. When composing the first draft, focus on getting your ideas down instead of worrying about proofreading.
Take a break to get a little distance from the essay after you finish the first draft. Coming back to the essay, you will be able to do revision and editing with fresh eyes. To further help your revision, print out the essay and read it out aloud. You can also ask someone else to give you some valuable feedback. You can repeat the drafting and revising process until the finished product satisfies you.
